Copyright workflow

How to report Shopify copyright infringement

Map each copied creative work to its original source and to the exact suspected storefront URL.

Identify the original work

Copyright may cover original product photography, illustrations, video, long-form descriptions, diagrams, or other creative expression. It does not protect a general idea, product function, short commonplace phrase, or the bare fact that two shops sell a similar item. List each work separately so a reviewer can compare like with like.

Build a source-to-copy map

For every work, record your original public URL, first-publication date if known, source file or dated production record, the suspected URL, and a capture timestamp. A two-column image or text comparison can help, but preserve the full page context as well. Hashing stored HTML can show that a particular capture has not changed after collection.

Check ownership and permissions

Confirm who created the material, whether an employee or contractor assigned the rights, and whether the other party could have a license or shared supplier feed. If you are an agent, keep written authorization to act. Registration details can be useful where applicable, but the submission must still identify the specific work and location.

Submit a narrow URL list

Open Shopify's official merchant-report tool , choose copyright, and follow the current form. Separate URLs with copied material from pages that merely link to them. Read every good-faith and accuracy statement before signing. Save the confirmation and any counter-notice or follow-up so the history is complete.

Avoid overclaiming

Similar page layout, standard product specifications, and supplier-made images may not be yours to claim. Automated text or image similarity is an investigative lead, not proof of ownership or infringement. When ownership, fair use, licensing, or jurisdiction is uncertain, consult a qualified lawyer before submitting a legal notice.
